When implementing a corrugated roofing system, it is essential to use snow barriers, which perform various functions. One of these is to protect pedestrians and property at the gutter walkway level from falling snow. Another function is to protect the gutter system and gutters from being torn off when snow melts and ice falls. This is where many investors choose not to put snow barriers because they want to save money.
- protection against falling snow and ice on the pavement
- protection of the system gutters against tearing
- frost protection at the level of penetrations and skylights
Another and worse experience is when roof snow barriers are installed and improperly. In that case, roof snow barriers can damage not only the roofing felt, but also other types of roofing materials. One of these bad experiences is a property in the north of Slovakia where roofers from across the border installed these barriers incorrectly. They clearly did not fix the corrugated roofing with denser anchoring with movable clips, but also subsequently chose the wrong layout for these interceptors. This caused the snow barriers to slip out of the anchoring grooves, become deflected by the pressure of the melting ice and subsequently create holes in the titanium zinc roofing. It was this fault that caused the very extensive damage to the roofing and it is obvious that it is also necessary to take advice from the roofing contractor and to fix the individual interceptors according to the cladding plan. In Austria, the principle is that snow barriers are anchored as tightly as possible. This causes the snow to spread out over more fields in the roof area and this pressure is reduced. Yes, it comes at a higher cost, but it is better to invest the money in the barriers than in the subsequent reconstruction of the roof. But that’s another story.
