You know how it is! A job comes in. The season is in full swing. Installation schedules are planned to the hour, months in advance. Everything is running smoothly. Everything is working out. As the season progresses, the first of October arrives. The weather forecast warns of rain and threatens a cold front. You still can’t believe it. It can’t rain \u2014 we have work planned and in December we don’t want to be opening new roofs. But the opposite is true. In October it rains not for one, but for two weeks. In December you didn’t want to work, but you will \u2014 even between the holidays. This is not a bad dream. This is the reality of many roofers at the end of the season.<\/p>\n

So what do you do about it?<\/h2>\n

With this short story, I wanted to illustrate a brief glimpse into the life of a roofing crew. They have planned installations, but what they can’t plan for is the weather. That’s the wild card for every sheet metal worker. Whoever draws it has their entire strategy thrown off and has to deal with it. Jobs must be completed. Buildings need to be covered before winter. Promises must be kept. People don’t care about safety at work when water is leaking into their building. They just want it done!<\/p>\n

But there is hope. It’s not always as bleak as it looks. It can be managed and there are ways to help. You just have to realize that if a roofing crew normally works at 120%, then in bad weather they have to push and go to 200%. It may be a superhuman effort, but it can be done. Some go 24\/7 and others, when they have a good partner in machine supply, have an ace up their sleeve.<\/p>\n

The system of work is simple. All the necessary surfaces need to be covered as quickly as possible. Profile the sheets for the surfaces to cover what can be covered, and the work that one sheet metal worker on the scaffolding can do will follow. This one sheet metal worker has an important role. Finishing cassettes, creating wind strips or profiling small surfaces that are most often and take the longest to complete. They are part of the roof and they need to be done.<\/p>\n
