At Orava Castle we became part of the craftsmen who were invited to an event organized at Orava Castle called Wandering for Craft 2024 We gladly accepted the invitation and for tourists and visitors from the surrounding area, we prepared two interesting activities. One was suitable for the little ones and the other for the older and more skilled craftsmen.
What kind of activities?
- Laying square templates on the mock-up of an ihlan-shaped tower
- Braiding the rosette from the prepared copper slices
Putting square templates on the tower layout
This activity was designed for the youngest visitors. The mock-up had a punch-out ready where children effortlessly inserted individual stump stencils and in any direction. If they felt it was necessary to use a hammer for better fitting, they were provided with one as well.
The main aim of the activity was to introduce the plumbing craft by covering the model tower in a playful way.
Tourists were given the opportunity to make a similar tower at home through the attached web address with a QR code. Instructions can be found here: www.marcus.sk
Course of activity

Knitting of the rosette
The aim of the activity was to explain and show the tourists how it is possible to melt a copper rose. The tourists understood the procedure without lengthy explanations and many of them took their own rosette, made at the Orava Castle, home.
Procedure for weaving and shaping the rose
First, squares of copper sheet are cut out and then the curves are cut out to form the first petal. Four petals are needed for one rosette. We need to hammer shape on a hard best metal plate. Then we take round nose pliers and with these we shape the head of the rose. It is also possible to buy the complete production instructions with 1:1 scale templates and also with the petals already cut out. Find here www.marcus.sk The activity was designed for the more craft-savvy visitors.
The main objective of the activity was to promote craftsmanship and work with basic tools in cutting and shaping copper sheet.
Here we also tried the Outsourcing to customer method , which loosely translates to “Following our instructions, do it yourself” (Templates for making a rose )
